The London Tunnels

From secret shelter to immersive storyscape

Preserving and repurposing wartime tunnels for future generations

Client

The London Tunnels Ltd

Location

London

Challenge

The London Tunnels, a network of subterranean passageways constructed during the 1940s as air-raid shelters, had remained inaccessible to the public for nearly 70 years. The challenge was to transform these historically significant yet underutilised spaces into a unique cultural attraction. This required preserving the tunnels' structural integrity and historical essence while integrating modern amenities to accommodate up to two million visitors annually. Additionally, the project needed to navigate complex planning permissions and stakeholder interests to realise this ambitious vision.

Solution

G&T is appointed to provide Project Management, Employer’s Agent, and CDM Client Advisor services to support the transformation of the London Tunnels. Working closely with The London Tunnels Ltd and the design team, G&T will oversee the planning and development of immersive installations, including high-resolution curved screens, interactive displays, and advanced acoustic systems to bring the tunnels’ history to life. We will ensure the project balances the preservation of the site’s heritage with the delivery of a modern, engaging visitor experience, while also managing procurement processes and ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.

Outcome

Once complete, the revitalised London Tunnels will offer a powerful and immersive journey through a pivotal chapter of the city's past. The project is set to transform over a mile of historic tunnels into a world-class cultural destination, capable of welcoming up to two million visitors each year. Through careful planning and strategic oversight, G&T will help deliver a scheme that protects and celebrates the site’s heritage while creating a dynamic new asset for London’s cultural landscape.
