Challenge
The Britishvolt Gigaplant was conceived as the UK’s first full-scale electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility, set on a 95-hectare former coal site in Northumberland. The project was ambitious in scope—targeting 30 GWh production capacity and significant regional economic uplift. However, it faced considerable challenges from the outset, including the complexities of transforming brownfield land, aligning with rapidly shifting market conditions, securing long-term funding, and meeting evolving regulatory and sustainability expectations at pace.
Solution
G&T provided early-stage Cost Planning and Supply Chain Management services to support Britishvolt through the initial development phase. Working closely with the client, contractor (ISG), and wider consultant team, we advised on site enabling works, infrastructure mobilisation, budgeting, and procurement strategies. Our role helped establish financial clarity and risk-informed decision-making during a critical window of project definition and funding mobilisation.
Outcome
Despite extensive groundwork and site preparation activity, the Britishvolt Gigaplant was ultimately not taken forward due to changes in market conditions and funding challenges. However, G&T’s involvement helped lay the foundation for informed investment decisions and demonstrated the critical role of disciplined cost and procurement strategy in complex, early-phase industrial developments. The site is now under consideration for alternative uses, with lessons from the Britishvolt vision continuing to inform future large-scale energy infrastructure projects in the UK.
